The Eagles debutaron en 1972, rescatando el sonido sureño, mezclándolo con un exquisito toque de guitarra y un toque de rock un tanto suave, además de pinceladas de country y western. El primer álbum de Eagles fue "Take it easy", cuyo primer sencillo llevaba el mismo nombre.
En 1976 Eagles publica su mejor álbum y el más vendido. El título era "Hotel California", que terminó de catapultar a los Eagles a la cima de la fama y con el que ganaron un Grammy. En "Hotel California" los Eagles aportan su visión agridulce de la sociedad estadounidense a través de las ventanas de un hotel que representa metafóricamente el mundo de las drogas. "Hotel California" es uno de los discos más vendidos de la historia y su tema estrella y que le da título ha sido reconocida como una de las mejores canciones, y aun hoy en día sigue apareciendo en las listas de las 10 canciones más importantes de la historia de la música. De ese álbum se extrajo una frase que pasó a formar parte del lenguaje popular estadounidense: "vivir en la vía rápida" (Life in the fast lane). Tras la aparición de "Hotel California" Randy Meisner abandonó la banda, siendo sustituido por por Timothy Schmit.
En 1994, tras catorce años de separación, los Eagles deciden unirse de nuevo para seguir tocando. Su primer trabajo de esta nueva época es el álbum "Hell Freezes Over" (El Infierno se congela), con cuatro nuevos temas y 11 éxitos anteriores.
En 2003 Eagles publica un doble disco recopilatorio con sus mejores temas. El título es "The complete greatest hits".
